As the title suggests I have another restore question, although a little different from my previous one:

Thanks to Quickstart my main system was sorted out nicely, and I have Jaunty as a single installation on the system, using a separate home partition.

However, my main machine is starting to feel its age and I am considering transferring my installation to another machine entirely, and this is where my question(s) begin.

The New machine already has Jaunty running as a dual boot with XP (games for the kids, honest!), and I am concerned about the GRUB settings if I restore my current / over the top of the new one. Is GRUB (and its settings etc) a part of the / backup file or the 'Settings' backup file (Which I know not to restore willynilly).

I have no issues about restoring my original home backup onto the new machine, just the / and GRUB.

So. Is a restore with Quickstart the way to go or would you advise simply setting up the new machine manually to match the original workhorse, perhaps restoring home to keep all my settings etc?

regards

Max

Definitely don't restore your "/" backup on the new machine, it will probably mess it up severly. Different hardware means a different software configuration, so if you try to use the config from one machine on another there probably won't be pretty results. My suggestion would be to simply restore the "/home" backup onto the new machine, then do everything else (installation of apps, other config files etc...) manually.

Hope you get it all working :)

I couldn't agree with talsemgeest more.

For as long as I've been using QS I have never needed the backups of "/" or "system", because if something goes wrong, it's going to be in one of those areas. "home" however has all the stuff you need.

The "configurations" for the programs you will be installing etc, as you said. So simply restore "home" to the new machine. If there are programs on the "workhorse" that are not on the new machine, put them in a script and grab them all at once:

Code:
#!/bin/bash
# By mdpalow
sudo aptitude install vnstat conky curl lm-sensors hddtemp -y

make the list as long as you want with a space between the program names and end it with a "-y" so it doesn't ask you "Are you sure?".

Have a nice day.
Bruce

Thanks everyone, thats pretty much what I expected. I know not to just restore the settings, but I have used the backup of / before to transfer an installation to a new partition, although this was all done on the same hardware.

cheers everyone

Yep, a "/" restore on the same hardware will usually work, and will sometimes even work on similar hardware (new HDD, different RAM etc...), but on completely different hardware it will almost never work.

Also, always happy to help :D
